Flock “together”

August 8th, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

I was just looking for some aggregator plugin for Firefox when this struck my eyes — A complete “social browser”. Flock looks too good and has some beautiful features. Best of all, the browser is built on Firefox.

Linux and Mac? Yes, of course. Beta still.

I took the liberty to steal the feature list from Wikipedia.

  • Flock’s custom homepage, “My World”, tells you when your friends have new photos and videos and when you have new feeds. My World gives quick access to your recently visited favorite sites as well.
  • Bookmarks, in addition to being saved offline, can be replaced with del.icio.us. When a bookmark (known as a favorite) is added, it is added to the user’s del.icio.us account.
  • Favorites can be tagged
  • A favorites and history section are integrated into the favorites manager
  • Built-in full-text search using Clucene (C++ implementation of Lucene). Search as you type for pages in the cache
  • Flickr and Photobucket integration
  • Technorati tagging
  • Blogging tools
  • News aggregator
  • Drag-and-drop” capability and a clipboard like feature known as “The Shelf.”
  • Media Mini Bar, allows you to search, stream, and view content off of sites like YouTube and Truveo.
  • Built in uploader, to submit content to flickr and photobucket

AllPeers crashes Firefox

March 16th, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

After installing AllPeers and using it for a few days, I had my firefox crashed giving me a core dump.

When i tried to open my firefox from my terminal, i got this.

arun@arun-desktop:~$ firefox
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
AllPeers initiated successfully
''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

Now, will tell you how i solved this issue..

Type
arun@arun-desktop:~$ firefox -safe-mode

You will have a dialog giving a few options.

Do not load your plugins. And once your firefox is up, uninstall or disable All Peers. All Peers knows that there is a bug in there and they are already working on it.

For windows users, get inside the Mozilla Firefox folder and there you can see firefox.exe. Then stay in the Firefox folder and issue the above commands. I dont use Windows. So, if this fix did work, please do leave a comment.

Open Two Gmail accounts in Firefox — IETab and Cookiepie

March 2nd, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

If you have more than one gmail account and you use firefox, you are in deep trouble. Coz, you will need to logout and login to the new account in order to check mails.  If you are a Windows user, here come “a” solution for it. A firefox extension called IE Tab.  “This is a great tool for web developers, since you can easily see how your webpage displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox”.

IE Tab

And if you are just like me being crazy about Firefox and/or use Linux in your desktop, then IE Tab is not an option since IE Tab is just for Windows.

Here comes the solution for Linux/Mac & Windows users. CookiePie

“CookiePie is a Firefox extension enabling you to maintain different cookies storage in different tabs and windows. It means that you can for example open multiple GMail/Yahoo Mail/Hotmail accounts in different tabs and windows simulteanously.”

Firefox hits the 300 million mark in 2 years

February 14th, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

Its Great news. And i am glad to share it with you all. Firefox downloads had now reached a whopping 300+ million downloads since its inception in November 2004. On an average it means more than 3,60,000 downloads each day. Personally, its been long time since I stopped using Windows. Initially, I missed Internet Explorer and never used tabbed browsing even in Firefox (those features not in IE). But I chose to follow the migration rule “Try anything for 21 days and it becomes a habit”. But it was just a week and a few days that i got addicted to firefox, with thousands of cool plugins and themes and easy customization with that “about:config” page. Now, turning back i say to myself… “What features in Internet Explorer, if at all it had some, did i miss in Firefox initially?

Feel like moving to Firefox? Just click a few pixels below…

Its fast. Its beautiful. Its Camino.

February 6th, 2007 Arun Manivannan 1 comment

Just like Swiftfox is an optimized version of Firefox on Linux, that gives, if not mindblowing, a faster response time compared to Firefox, here comes the Camino for Mac. The sexiest thing about Camino is that it gives that Aqua look of Mac with most of the features of Firefox built it : spell checking, single window mode, bookmarks back-up, session saving. Though in its Alpha release, CNET has already rated Camino as a better alternative to Safari, the default browser for Mac.

Unlike its family members, Camino is built on Mac native Cocoa APIs and not on the XML User Interface Language (XUL). This means that the browser will be faster on Mac. But this also means that the add-ons that we use on Firefox cannot be used on this browser since all the add-ons are built on XUL.

MHT Archives in Mozilla

February 3rd, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

If you were an Internet Explorer user and recently migrated to Mozilla, just because you finally decided to ditch that buggy OS and embrace the lovely Linux, you would have missed a few good (accidental) features of IE.

One, the creation of MHT archives is not possible in the “Vanilla” Mozilla. Personally, i hate creating a folder and a html page for every single page i save from the internet. I know you too are. We need it in one single pack. Like the MHT archive in IE. Here comes the solution for Mozilla.

Find the plugin here.

http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~sanda/maf/

Just open the file with Firefox and you are done with the installation process. It works fine with my Firefox 2.0.

Two, the Image Toolbar in IE that comes up when we move our mouse over an image. Mozilla does provide the same feature but as an add-on

Click Tools –> Add ons –> Get extensions

image toolbar

Search for Image Toolbar in the “Find More Addons” (our stuff comes up in the second page)

There are a lot, lot and lots of add-ons available there. You could just browse and find yourself lost. There was also some plugin for Orkut !!!

Here is my list of addons.

toobar list

Mozilla is ruling the internet. Same is the effect on me.
