Ubuntu inspires Linspire

February 9th, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

Before switching to Kubuntu, I was using Freespire (free edition based on Linspire linux) for a few weeks. It looked a lot like Windows. (no wonder it was initially named as Lindows). I liked that inbuilt proprietory audio and video codecs and the Click-N-Run (CNR) feature of it. Just imagine an executable living inside a Linux operating system. But after switching over to Kubuntu, I never turned back. With good hardware support, lots of help from user groups, 6-month release cycle, I could never want any other thing on my system. Frankly speaking, i dont dual boot. Just Kubuntu.

Whats all this story about.

Linspire will now immediately transition to Ubuntu as the base for their Linspire and Freespire operating systems, and Ubuntu will utilize Linspire’s CNR technology for Ubuntu’s software delivery system.

You might ask. But aren’t they competitors? Of course, they are. Guess what they say about this new partnership.

“While both companies, and their respective projects, do compete at certain levels, both are interested in seeing greater desktop Linux adoption and growth. By joining forces they can work together to focus more attention on addressing common challenges Linux faces in a world dominated by Microsoft Windows”

No more Gmail invites

February 9th, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

Wish you had that Sign up link in Gmail instead of asking your friends to give an invitation? Very soon that will happen. Google has already given up its invite-only policy in certain countries. What i see is that US, Australia, Newzealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, some European countries and Brazil are already availing this offer.

And Google terms this move as a step in the “ongoing growth strategy”. As if they had not grown enough !!!

Most popular Vista Edition

February 9th, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

With just a few days passing by after the monstrously hyped Vista got released, the Operating System is now taking up the most successful marketing strategy of Microsoft. Pirated copies. :-) It was just 4 months, actually two months before the release of first Edition of Vista that a grand white paper was released by Microsoft in the name Microsoft’s Software Protection Platform   which states this as a conclusion :

Windows Vista and Windows Server “Longhorn” will be among the first products from Microsoft to take advantage of the new Software Protection Platform, an innovative platform from Microsoft that strengthens anti-piracy technologies to help better protect customers and improve the overall licensing experience.

Here is the recent edition of  Vista.

Pirated vista

Some “Iranian”  hackers have managed to present the “fully-cracked” version of the operating system.

The pirated version is presented by an Iranian Software company and also has the possibility for its owner to have a legal serial number of the OS. With the legal serial number the users can easily activate the OS from Microsoft’s web site and enjoy all the benefits of buying a Pirated Original version of the OS.

Still better is the cost of the pirated version. While the original version of the OS is selling for around $650 you can easily get your hands to this pirated version for just $8. I don’t think this is the response that Microsoft expected from their ‘Most Advanced Operating System’.

Russian Police — staunch supporters of Linux ;-)

February 9th, 2007 Arun Manivannan No comments

The Russian police didnt try to search for and arrest the mobsters who supply pirated copies of Windows directly to companies. Instead they arrested a headmaster who bought pirated copies from one of those companies.

Result : Russian schools in the area are so scared that they are buying Linux instead.
